Some Popular Small Cars in the UK

Although it is not always the case it quite often works out that smaller city cars end up being cheaper to insure. They’re also good first cars to own because their lack of power will usually also help to keep you out of trouble. So what are some of the most popular small cars in the UK? Here are a few seasoned favourites.

The Toyota Yaris

Japanese cars have long been renowned for their reliability and their economy which has made the Toyota Yaris a popular choice for many who are on the hunt for a small car. Its popularity has also ensured that there is a good supply of Yaris’s available on the second hand market. The Yaris is compact, easy to park and many people feel that it looks great too.

The Ford Fiesta

If you live in the UK and you haven’t heard of the Fiesta before then I’m guessing you’ve spent the majority of your life on some secluded Hebridean Island. The Ford Fiesta is one of the most popular small cars ever and you will find scrap yards full of the things – which can be a real bonus if you are looking to buy an older model and are going to be running a car on a tight budget.

The Ford Ka

Sticking with Ford we now come to the Ka. The Ford Ka is a compact and fun vehicle and could be a great choice if you want something cheap to run while still being a pleasure to drive. Wondering how popular the Ka is? Well many estimates state that the Ford Ka accounts for about 20% of the UK city car market, not bad going when you consider all of the competition that’s around.

The Nissan Micra

The Nissan Micra is a car that just seems to have been around forever, doesn’t it? It’s true that some of the earlier models weren’t the most attractive around but in recent years the design of the Micra has evolved and this has increased its popularity. Again with Nissan being a Japanese car the Micra is also considered to be economical and reliable.

The Chevrolet Spark

If you haven’t heard of the Chevrolet Spark then you may have heard of its predecessor the Daewoo Matiz? The Spark is a fun little car that is popular all over the world. In America you can also get hold of the Spark as an electric car. While the UK version of the spark is powered more conventionally it still offers efficiency and some would say a stylish way of getting around.

The Mini Cooper

While the newer version of the Mini Cooper may be a little more budget busting than the other cars mentioned on this list, it really couldn’t be excluded from a list of popular small cars as it is so highly respected and sought after. If they had the budget I think a large proportion of new drivers would be happy to cruise around in a new Mini Cooper and there are versions of the car available to appeal to both the Male and Female markets.

The Vauxhall Corsa

The Vauxhall Corsa is an extremely popular car since its release in the early 90’s and it sits near the top of the UK bestselling vehicles list every year. If you have never owned a Corsa yourself it is quite likely that you will know somebody who has, which is a real testament to its popularity. It is a nicely shaped car that is non-offensive to the eye and the budget to boot. The sportier Sxi version of the car is also not as expensive to insure as you might think especially if you go for the 1.2 version. It’s a good idea to get a quote before buying any vehicle though to avoid any nasty surprises.

This was supposed to be a quick post really so if you are looking for more in-depth reviews of any of the cars listed above or other cheap cars to insure then please head over to our ‘What Insurance Group?’ category of this site. Each car review in this section goes into a lot more detail and also gives much more information as to the insurance grouping of each of these vehicles.
